When It Rains: Caring for Your Handbag on Grey Days

When It Rains: Caring for Your Handbag on Grey Days

There’s something about a grey, rainy day in Auckland that makes you second guess your handbag choice. You glance out the window, see those moody skies and puddles forming, and instinctively reach for your oldest, most weathered handbag - just in case. But is there an alternative?

Choose the Right Bag for the Weather

If the weather forecast is looking grim, opt for a bag made of materials that can better handle damp conditions. Coated canvas, treated leather, and even some synthetic materials offer more protection than suede or untreated leather. Nylon bags are also lightweight, practical, often more water-resistant, and easier to dry off if the sky opens up.

Keep your more delicate bags at home when the rain rolls in. Not only will you spare them from potential water damage, but you'll also have peace of mind while you're out and about.

Waterproofing

One of the best things you can do for your handbags is apply a good-quality leather protector or waterproofing spray. These create a barrier that helps repel water and stains. Just make sure to use the right product for the type of leather or material you’re treating.

Do a patch test first, and remember to reapply as needed - especially if your bag is often exposed to the elements.

Pack Smart

Rainy weather can sneak up on you. Pop a reusable shopping bag, foldable rain cover, or even a shower cap into your handbag for emergencies. If the skies open suddenly, you’ll have a quick fix to protect your bag in a pinch.

Also consider what's inside your handbag. A small towel or cloth can help you dab away any unexpected drips or splashes. Lining your bag with a waterproof pouch can also protect your belongings from rain, leaks and spills.

Drying It Out (the Right Way)

If your handbag does get caught in the rain, don’t panic. First, gently pat it dry with a soft cloth - don’t rub, as that can damage the material. Avoid using direct heat like hairdryers or placing it next to a heater, as this can cause the leather to dry out and crack.

Instead, let the bag air dry in a well-ventilated space and once it's completely dry, use a handbag shaper or stuff it with acid-free tissue to help maintain its shape. Applying a premium quality conditioner suitable for the material can also be a great idea to keep it supple.

Know When to Carry and When to Care

A rainy forecast doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style - but it does mean being selective. Choosing the right handbag for the weather, preparing ahead with waterproofing and protective tools, and knowing how to care for your bag afterwards can make all the difference.

Your favourite handbags deserve a little TLC on grey days. With a thoughtful approach, you can preserve their beauty, extend their life, and feel confident stepping out, no matter the weather.
