Progress Over Perfection: Why I Don’t Make New Year’s Resolutions

As the year winds down and we prepare to welcome 2025, I’ve been reflecting on how this time of year is often approached.  Traditionally, New Year’s resolutions dominate the conversation—a fresh start, a big leap forward, or a list of things we must do to make this year the year.  But here’s the thing: I don’t make New Year’s resolutions.

Instead, I believe that every single day offers us the chance to make small, meaningful choices that move us closer to the life we imagine for ourselves.  Life isn’t about dramatic overhauls or grand gestures; it’s about the small, consistent steps we take daily.

The Power of Little Steps

Big resolutions can feel exciting in January but overwhelming by February.  Progress, on the other hand, is all about consistency over perfection.  Every small step adds up. Every small decision matters.  Think about it: pausing for a deep breath when your world seems overwhelming, choosing to go for that walk even though you don’t feel like it, cleaning out your handbag to make it a more manageable black hole.  These little moments are powerful. They are the quiet progress that shapes a better tomorrow for future you.

Why New Year’s Still Matters

While I’m not one for resolutions, I do think the New Year is a wonderful opportunity to pause and reflect on our priorities. It’s a moment to ask:

  • What truly matters to me?
  • What do I want to make more space for in my life?
  • What will bring me joy and fulfilment this year?

For me, one of my top priorities for 2025 will be taking care of what I already have. This mindset not only applies to my handbags but also my time, my relationships, and my overall well-being.  It’s about embracing quality over quantity, cherishing the little things, and taking moments to truly stop and savour life.

As we step into 2025, let’s focus on what really counts: progress over perfection, consistency over grand gestures, and being present in the small joys of life.

Here’s to a year filled with little steps that lead to big happiness.

Wishing you a peaceful and intentional New Year,
Lucy x
